Group Size: 9
Starting Point: Glasgow
Based:Arduaine (between Oban and Lochgilphead)
Walking: Easy to Moderate

Description :

This wonderfully picturesque area of West Scotland is one of its best kept secrets, receiving just a modest amount of attention as a productive wildlife region. From our base by Loch Melfort we visit the charming islands of Lismore and Luing, the enchanting forest habitats of Knapdale Forest south of the Crinan Canal, and the captivating coastline of the Kintyre Peninsula with its foaming surf and views of Northern Ireland.

Coastal bays are explored for Otters, the River Add and Loch Sween for fishing Ospreys, while in Knapdale beaver habitat is visited. A serious effort is made to locate and view these fabulous animals.

This is the height of the nesting season when the air resounds to the songs and calls of all manner of birds - too numerous to list. Golden Eagles soaring above ridges, Eiders with broods of duckling around tidelines and Common Crossbills 'chupping' from the forest canopy reflect the diversity.

Timing of the tour ensures that wildflower content is rewarding, with visits to habitats where we should see the scarce Marsh Fritillary butterfly.

In addition to being superbly scenic this incredibly mild region of West Scotland is steeped in history, featuring the greatest assemblage of historic sites outside Orkney.

This event essentially involves more walking than on most other tours, participants being required to cover distances of several miles most days - at our usual leisurely pace.
