April 10 - 16 Sat - Fri
Group Size: 9
Starting Point: Inverness
Based: Farr 2 nights, Strontian 4 nights
Walking: Easy to moderate
Description:
At this time of year cover is sparse thereby enhancing mammal-viewing conditions. Emergent vegetation is fresh and tender, luring deer out to feed. Hares are very active as increased day length induces courtship activity - some Blue Hares still sport their elegant white-coats. Being largely nocturnal Wildcats and Pine Martens are rarely seen so, accordingly, we conduct our search for these after dark using powerful spotlights - which often produce good views of owls (Tawny, Barn and Long-eared) as a bonus. Pine Martens are also watched at a baited site.
In order to locate the widest possible range of species we search the breadth of the Highlands, from Speyside to Ardnamurchan. During two full days and nights based in Strathnairn above Loch Ness we target Badger, Bottlenose Dolphin, Blue Hare, Red Squirrel and deer. Four days and nights based by Loch Sunart target Otter, Wildcat, Pine Marten, Harbour Porpoise, Grey and Common Seals.
Although the main focus is mammals we also expect to encounter many worthwhile birds, including raptors, divers and grouse. Iceland Gulls, White-tailed and Golden Eagles (often performing courtship display) were seen on all previous early season mammal tours.
The tour is based in two of Scotland's most stunningly scenic regions, operated at a time when tourists are conspicuous by their absence. The hotels used have fabulous outlooks, and combine unsurpassed hospitality with excellent cuisine.
Our tried and tested nighttime excursions usually take place from about 21:45 until midnight, with a civilised leisurely breakfast at 09:00 the following morning. Wildlife viewing after dark is essentially from the vehicle.
